This study-unit shall present a broad overview of museums today and their evolution over the past two centuries. It shall present a contemporary view to the stereotypical understanding of what a museum should be and how this institution relates more to critical, participatory, inclusive and radical museology. It shall then present, discuss and review the bolts and nuts of the museum institution, its function and purpose with a focus on the European Museum Network. The latest trends and developments shall also be presented for discussion via a broad range of case studies.

Study-unit Aims

This study-unit aims to engage students with:

  1. Ways and means how museums can be understood and referred to as an adult educational space and resource;
  2. Museum typologies through the lens of pedagogy;
  3. Latest trends and developments informed by
    1. the democratisation of museum space,
    2. digital maturity, and
    3. climate change action.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding

/By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  1. Discuss museums as adult education spaces and resources;
  2. Discuss contemporary museology and the museum idea informing 21st century museum practice; and
  3. dentify interactive, multi-platform and technology-driven tools of museum education.

Learning Outcomes: Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  1. Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of the traditional museum institution through the lens of 21st century museology practice;
  2. Analyze the management of (physical and virtual) museum assets to develop pedagogical and educational outreach initiatives, particularly for adults; and
  3. Integrate museums in a specified adult or community education initiative.
